Help for Severe Jaw Misalignments

Combined orthodontic-orthognathic surgical therapy

Orthodontics and Surgery:
Reliable Function and Appealing Aesthetics

Another form of therapy, which in most cases is only applied to adult patients with particularly severe jaw misalignments or jaw malformations or deformations of the jaws or facial skull, is the combined orthodontic-surgical treatment. Inherited and acquired malformations in the jaw-facial area often exert an unfavorable influence on facial aesthetics. In most cases, speech, chewing ability, and breathing are also significantly impaired.

These misalignments can often only be satisfactorily corrected through combined orthodontic-surgical treatment. In this case, after orthodontic pretreatment, the misalignment is surgically corrected by a maxillofacial surgeon (e.g., surgical advancement or setback of the jaw). The treatment concludes with a short orthodontic fine-adjustment phase, in which the teeth are precisely aligned to the new bite situation.
